As promised, I really did migrate to a new platform and rebuild the whole thing fresh.
Why?
Well, the old platform – Grav CMS – shat the bed in multiple ways. After a simple point release update ended up breaking the entire site, I began looking into new options for a platform.
After Grav CMS announced that they were going to go hard on AI integration?
Yeah, no, I’m not into that.
I get that AI is everywhere.. And as a developer, there is a certain degree of looming, inescapable reality (at the moment) in regards to AI.
First off: No, I didn’t use AI with this rebuild. At all. I like writing code, and while I may be required to use AI at my day job I myself can gleefully hand-code everything without it (and honestly it’s a good thing I do, so I can make sure to keep my skills up).
So, after some research, testing, frustrations and more, I settled on doing a WordPress build (read more about how I ended up reaching that decision here on my personal blog).
This one is a bit different, though; Instead of a traditional WordPress stack, I decided to put the platform itself on a private environment and use a static build & deploy setup to copy everything over to the production site..
..Which, if your tinnitus is acting up, that basically means shit is stupid fast relative to a regular WordPress site.
Now we come to an apology:
It took longer than I would’ve liked to do this because it has been hot enough to melt my mustache lately, so working on code in the evenings was a non-starter.
That also meant gaming was typically heavily limited; I actually spent most of my evenings reading in front of multiple fans it has been so hot.
Speaking of reading – I just finished Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove, and it was fantastic. You should read it. Also, a bunch of great works by John Scalzi are up on Humble Bundle (Old Man’s War series = ahmazing, and I just read the latest entry in that one before OMaM), and proceeds benefit charity (and he’s even putting his cut into his own charity he runs).
Anyway, now that we’ve got the site deployed I can get back to gaming; I do have some new games in the queue (including a new 3rd party DCS module that I wanna talk about), some stuff I picked up during Steam’s summer sale, and of course we’ve also got the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resync coming out next week (I’m going to wait to pick it up though).
Also: There will be bugs, I’m sure, so be patient while I work those out. Oh, and old posts will have some minor quirks due to the nature of the multi-path import into WP.
Now, if you’ll excuse me.. I need to twiddle my sticks in a manner that makes airplanes go zoooooooom.
